14:00 on 06.05.16 Phil reports on the incident
“Last night I had a pretty tricky climb up the mast to retrieve the halyard that snapped off in high winds. I was thrown around like a rag-doll, despite it being relatively calm. I am massively pleased though as it meant that I could fly my big spinnaker this morning.”
As Phil reports he hears a strange sound on deck…
“I heard a flapping sound and rushed on deck to find the spinnaker completely shredded to pieces! I had to stop the boat immediately and haul it out of the water once again… This is a massive blow as it was my most useful spinnaker of the lot. This was a good compromise for medium to strong downwind.”
Phil continues…
“Despite this non-stop action on board I am actually trying to get some rest in ahead of tonight’s storm, where the wind will go to over 40 kts constant… gusting 50 or more. So am pretty anxious about the conditions ahead – the important thing is to be prepared for it, keep safe and keep the boat in one piece. But it’s difficult to know what we can expect…”
